Paulig Eye Surgery Centre First to Offer Innovative Keratoconus Treatment in Germany

The center prepares to welcome patients from throughout Europe

COTTBUS, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Paulig Eye Surgery Centre announces today that it has acquired advanced technology for performing Keraflex KXL, a new, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for keratoconus. Surgeons at the Paulig Eye Surgery Centre will immediately begin treating patients using Avedro, Inc’s Keraflex ® and KXL™ Systems.

“to have been chosen to be a participant in Avedro’s International Keratoconus Registry. Knowledge acquired through this registry will certainly contribute to improving the treatment of keratoconus patients and is sure to have an impact on Keratoconus globally.”

Keratoconus is a debilitating visual impairment for which there are limited treatment options. Using the Keraflex System, a non-surgical microwave device, keratoconic corneas can be gently reshaped in a simple procedure that lasts only a few seconds. Following corneal reshaping, the cornea is then strengthened and biomechanically stabilized in a procedure taking only minutes using Avedro’s KXL System for accelerated cross-linking. Until now, there has been no treatment to non-invasively reshape a keratoconic cornea and prior cross-linking alternatives required one hour to complete.

Dr. Sylvia Paulig is an innovator and international leader in providing comprehensive eye care. She states, “The combined technology and procedures that Avedro has made available to the Paulig Eye Surgery Center offers our keratoconic patients a non-surgical alternative to correct their vision adversely affected by keratoconus and then quickly and efficiently stabilizing and halting the progression of their disease. We are finally able to offer our keratoconic patients a fast, safe, non-invasive treatment and alternative to corneal transplant.”

“Our internationally recognized staff is pleased and gratified,” Dr. Paulig continued, “to have been chosen to be a participant in Avedro’s International Keratoconus Registry. Knowledge acquired through this registry will certainly contribute to improving the treatment of keratoconus patients and is sure to have an impact on Keratoconus globally.”
